The key creators and founders of this open source project are Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little. The project has its origins in 2001 and the official „premiere” of WordPress took place in 2003. Matt Mullenweg founded Automattic Inc. which is the owner of WordPress.com – a commercial service that allows you to run a blog without your own hosting as part of a paid service. The service allows you to set up your own blog and in the paid version we can connect your domain. We do not have full control over the software that runs within such WordPress.

The WordPress.org domain and services are maintained by the WordPress Foundation, which received the rights to use the WordPress logo in 2010. It is from this site that we download the installation files and in this way we become the independent owner of the entire site and system. We can freely control the entire website, make any changes to it, change the panel and all files together with the branding. What’s more, for any price, we can legally sell such a project to anyone (as long as the license of this product is also compatible with the GNU GPL).
